Newsletter 1/4/2013

Welcome back from the break!
  
Here are some updates on the info being taught this next week in Chinese/English. 
 
English literacy: starting a new unit this week.
  • Story: "A Weed is a Flower" Unit 3 Week 5

Chinese literacy: We will continue Unit 15 from Singapore website. The stories are about all the things an independent second-grader can do. :)
  • Vocabulary we will be learning to write:
    •  自 zì- self, oneself, myself
    • 己 jǐ -self, oneself (this character is used with the one above to make the word "self")
    • 书 shū- book, letter, document
    • 包 bāo- pack, package
    • 电 diàn- electric, electricity (used to make the word "computer" which is literally "electric brain"-- 电脑diànnǎo)
    • 衣 yī - clothing (used in the word "clothing"- 衣服 yīfú)
    • 起 qǐ -rise, stand up, go up, begin
    • 再 zài- again
  • Vocabulary we will be learning to read/listen to/say
    •  All on the Singapore website in the stories and in the stories sent home to practice reading (Unit 15).
  • Unit 15 Test will be Friday, 1/11/2013
Math:
  • Unit 7 "Mental Subtraction" 
  • Unit 7 Test will be Friday, 1/11/2013
Homework Expectations:

In both English and Chinese classes, homework will now be given Monday-Thursday.

English: daily practice of spelling and vocabulary from weekly story. 
Math: English worksheet reinforcing concepts taught in Chinese class daily.
Chinese: homework will consist of character practice, character worksheets, or reading.
